Users complete signup but never finish setup
Show a visible checklist of setup steps with a progress bar. The completion drive is powerful motivation.
When to use
Your product requires multiple setup steps and users are dropping off partway through.
Hypothesis template
If we add a visible setup checklist with fill in: X steps and a progress bar, setup completion will increase by fill in: target% because progress visualization drives completion.
Method
The problem: Users sign up but only complete 1-2 of the 5 steps needed to get value. They don't know what's left or why it matters.
What HubSpot did: A prominent checklist in the dashboard showing setup steps with a progress bar. Each completed step fills the bar and gives positive feedback.
The result: Setup completion rates increased significantly. The progress bar creates a psychological pull — people hate leaving things at 60%.
How to do it:
- Define your setup steps (keep to 4-6 items)
- Put the checklist prominently in the dashboard — not hidden in settings
- Add a progress bar that fills as steps complete
- Pre-complete any steps you can (e.g., "Create account ✓")
- Start the bar at 20-30% to show momentum
- Celebrate completion with confetti or a reward
Key insight: Starting the progress bar at 20% (by pre-completing account creation) makes users 2x more likely to finish. Nobody wants to abandon something already started.
