Users sign up and get stuck on an empty screen
Show users what your product can do for them before asking them to configure anything.
When to use
Your product requires setup before value. Users drop off during configuration steps.
Hypothesis template
If we show fill in: instant value demo before requiring fill in: setup/configuration, activation will increase by fill in: target% because users experience the benefit before investing effort.
Method
The problem: Your product requires setup — adding a team, configuring settings, importing data — before users see any value. Most quit before they get there.
What Grammarly did: The moment you install the extension, it starts working. No configuration. You see your first correction within 60 seconds. Then you think "oh, I need this."
The result: Grammarly has one of the highest activation rates in SaaS because value is instant. Users upgrade to Pro after they're already hooked.
How to do it:
- Map your current signup-to-value journey: count every step before the user gets value
- Find a way to show value BEFORE step 1: a demo, sample data, or instant analysis
- Move all configuration to after the "aha moment" — not before
- Use smart defaults instead of making users choose
- Show a quick win: "Here are 3 things we found" or "Here's your first result"
- Measure time-to-first-value and optimize ruthlessly
Key insight: Nobody configures a product they don't believe in yet. Show them the magic first, then ask for setup.
Success metrics
- •Time to first value
- •Signup-to-activation rate
- •Drop-off at each onboarding step
- •Day 1 return rate
Prerequisites
- A way to demonstrate value without full setup
- Sample data or demo mode
- Analytics on onboarding step completion
Common pitfalls
- •Asking for too much info before showing value
- •Requiring integrations or imports as step 1
- •Not having smart defaults
- •Showing a tour instead of actual product value
