Users create an account but never take the first meaningful action
A 3-step wizard that gets users to their first result in under 2 minutes. No exploration needed.
When to use
Users are dropping off between signup and first meaningful action.
Hypothesis template
If we add a fill in: 3-step quick start wizard, first-action completion will increase by fill in: target% because users get guided to value instead of exploring blindly.
Method
The problem: After signup, users see a dashboard with 10 options and don't know which one to click first. Analysis paralysis kills activation.
How to do it:
- Identify the ONE action that most correlates with retention
- Build a 3-step wizard that leads directly to that action:
- Step 1: One simple input (goal, name, or preference)
- Step 2: The core action (create first item, connect first thing)
- Step 3: See the result ("Here's what you get")
- Show the wizard immediately after signup — before the dashboard
- Let users skip (but track who does)
- After completion, land on the dashboard with their first item visible
Key insight: Three steps. Not five, not seven. Three. Every step beyond three drops completion by 20%.
Success metrics
- •Wizard completion rate
- •First action completion rate
- •Time to first value
- •Day 1 return rate
Prerequisites
- A clear first action to guide users toward
- A wizard UI component
- Analytics on current onboarding drop-off
Common pitfalls
- •Making it more than 3 steps
- •Asking for information instead of driving to action
- •Not showing a result at the end
- •Blocking the dashboard until completion (let them skip)
Source: Common pattern. Quick start wizards increase first-action completion by 40-60%.
