Common UX pattern

Your signup flow doesn't tell users what happens next

Add a "what to expect" step after signup

After signup, show users what's about to happen: "Step 1: Set a goal, Step 2: Pick an experiment, Step 3: See results." Reduces anxiety.

2-3 hours to implement, 2 weeks to measure

When to use

Users drop off during onboarding because they don't know what's expected.

Hypothesis template

If we add a fill in: what to expect screen after signup showing fill in: 3 steps, onboarding completion will increase by fill in: target% because users know what's coming.

Method

The problem: Users sign up and feel lost. They don't know how long setup takes, what they need to do, or when they'll see value.

How to do it:

  1. After signup, show a brief screen: "Here's your plan for the next 2 minutes"
  2. List 3 simple steps with estimated time
  3. Show a progress indicator as they complete each step
  4. Reassure: "This takes about 2 minutes"
  5. Track: step completion rate with vs without the expectations screen

Key insight: Uncertainty kills activation. "This will take 2 minutes" converts better than dumping users into a complex dashboard.

Success metrics

  • •Onboarding completion rate
  • •Time to complete onboarding
  • •Drop-off per step
  • •Day 1 return rate

Prerequisites

  • A post-signup screen you can add
  • Clear onboarding steps defined
  • Analytics on onboarding flow

Common pitfalls

  • •Making it too long (3 steps max)
  • •Lying about the time required
  • •Not showing progress
  • •Making it unskippable for returning users

Source: Common UX pattern. Setting expectations reduces onboarding anxiety and increases completion by 20-30%.
