Power users love your product but beginners feel slow
Show keyboard shortcuts in tooltips and menus. Users who learn shortcuts feel faster and more invested.
When to use
Your product is used frequently and has actions that benefit from keyboard shortcuts.
Hypothesis template
If we show keyboard shortcuts in fill in: tooltips/menus and track adoption, power user conversion will increase by fill in: target% because shortcuts make users feel efficient.
Method
The problem: Your product has keyboard shortcuts but nobody knows about them. Power features go undiscovered.
What Figma does: Shows keyboard shortcuts in every menu item and tooltip. Over time, users naturally learn them and feel faster.
The result: Users who learn keyboard shortcuts use the product 2x more frequently. They feel invested and productive.
How to do it:
- Show the keyboard shortcut next to every menu item and button tooltip
- When a user clicks something that has a shortcut, show a brief hint: "Tip: Use ⌘K next time"
- After 3 uses, stop showing the hint (they know)
- Create a "Keyboard shortcuts" panel accessible via ? key
- Track: shortcut adoption rate, usage frequency of shortcut users vs mouse users
- Add new shortcuts for the most common mouse-only actions
Key insight: Shortcuts aren't just efficiency — they're investment. A user who knows 10 shortcuts is 10x less likely to switch to a competitor.
Success metrics

- •Usage frequency (shortcut users vs non-shortcut)
- •Feature adoption speed

- Tooltip infrastructure
- Usage analytics per action method (click vs shortcut)
Common pitfalls
- •Showing all shortcuts at once (overwhelming)
- •Not being consistent with shortcut patterns
- •Showing hints too many times (3 max then stop)
- •Not having a reference panel for all shortcuts
Source: Figma, Notion, Linear. Keyboard shortcut users retain at 2x the rate of mouse-only users.
