Users complete actions but feel no sense of progress
Add micro-celebrations (confetti, success messages, badges) when users complete key actions. Positive reinforcement drives continued engagement.
When to use
Your product has clear milestones or progress steps. Users currently complete actions without feedback.
Hypothesis template
If we celebrate fill in: key milestones with fill in: confetti/badges/messages, users will complete fill in: target% more actions because positive reinforcement drives behavior.
Method
The problem: Users complete their first experiment, hit a milestone, or achieve a goal — and nothing happens. No feedback, no celebration, no encouragement to keep going.
What Duolingo does: Every lesson completion gets celebration animations, streak congratulations, and achievement badges. These small moments of joy keep users coming back.
The result: Celebration moments increase next-action completion by 20-40%. Users who feel progress keep going.
How to do it:
- Identify 5-8 milestone moments: first item created, first result logged, 5th experiment, etc.
- Add a celebration for each: confetti animation, success message, or badge
- Include encouragement: "Nice! You've completed your first experiment. Ready for #2?"
- Suggest the next action immediately after the celebration
- Keep celebrations brief (2-3 seconds) — don't interrupt the flow
- Track: next-action completion rate at each milestone
Key insight: The celebration isn't the point — the suggested next action is. The celebration builds momentum for the next step.
