Your outbound emails get ignored
Cold emails with a reference to a mutual connection or shared experience get 3-5x higher response rates.
When to use
You're doing outbound and have a specific target audience. Best for B2B with identifiable decision makers.
Hypothesis template
If we reference [mutual connections/shared context] in our outreach to [audience], we'll get [target]% response rate because warm intros cut through inbox noise.
Method
The problem: You're sending cold emails but getting < 1% response rate. Your emails look like every other pitch.
What works: Finding a genuine connection point before reaching out. Same conference, mutual LinkedIn connection, commented on their blog, use the same tools.
The result: Warm outreach converts at 15-25% response rate vs 1-3% for pure cold email.
How to do it:
- Before emailing anyone, spend 5 minutes researching them: LinkedIn, Twitter, blog, recent talks
- Find a genuine connection: mutual contact, shared interest, their recent content you liked
- Lead your email with the connection, not your pitch
- Keep it to 3 sentences: connection, observation about their problem, soft ask
- Follow up once after 3 days — then stop
- Track which connection types get the best response
Key insight: The email that says "Sarah mentioned you're struggling with X" gets opened. The one that says "Hi, I'm the founder of..." gets deleted.
