Users wait too long to decide on upgrading
After users experience key value, show a 48-hour discounted upgrade offer. Urgency plus demonstrated value converts.
When to use
You have a clear "aha moment" you can trigger the offer on. You're willing to offer a small discount.
Hypothesis template
If we offer fill in: discount% off for 48 hours after users fill in: complete key action, upgrade rate will increase by fill in: target% because urgency plus proven value drives decisions.
Method
The problem: Users like your product but procrastinate on upgrading. "I'll do it later" means never.
What works: After the user experiences a key value moment (completed first experiment, got first result, hit a limit), show a time-limited offer: "Upgrade in the next 48 hours for 20% off your first 3 months."
The result: Time-limited offers after demonstrated value convert 2-4x higher than evergreen pricing because the user already believes in the product and now has urgency.
How to do it:
- Identify your "aha moment" — the action that correlates with upgrades
- After this moment, show a personalized offer: "You just [achievement]. Upgrade now for 20% off."
- Set a visible countdown timer (48 hours works well)
- Send a reminder email at 24 hours and 2 hours before expiry
- Make the offer genuine — if they miss it, the price goes back to normal
- Track: conversion rate, revenue per offer, and whether discounted users retain differently
Key insight: The discount isn't the driver — the timing is. A discount before the aha moment feels like a sales tactic. After the aha moment, it feels like a reward.
Success metrics
- •Offer conversion rate
- •Revenue from limited offers
- •Discounted user retention vs full-price
- •Offer trigger rate (% of users who reach the aha moment)
Prerequisites
- Analytics to detect the aha moment
- A way to show timed offers in-app
- Email system for reminders
- A discount code or promotion system
Common pitfalls
- •Offering discounts to users who would upgrade anyway
- •Making the timer fake (ruins trust)
- •Triggering the offer too early (before value is proven)
- •Offering too deep a discount (10-20% is enough)
Source: Common SaaS pattern. Time-limited offers after value demonstration convert 2-4x higher than evergreen pricing.
