Revenue per account stays flat after the first purchase
Make it easy and valuable to add teammates. Each seat is expansion revenue without new customer acquisition.
When to use
Your product has collaboration features and serves teams. Currently pricing flat per account.
Hypothesis template
If we prompt users to add team members after fill in: trigger event and price per-seat, expansion revenue will increase by fill in: target% because each seat adds value.
Method
The problem: You acquire a customer for $X/month and that's what they pay forever. No growth per account.
What Figma did: Free for individuals, paid per editor seat. As teams adopted Figma, the account value grew automatically: 1 seat → 5 seats → 20 seats.
The result: Seat-based pricing creates natural expansion revenue. The average account value grows over time without any sales effort.
How to do it:
- If you don't price per seat, consider adding a team tier that does
- Make collaboration features that require teammates to have accounts
- Prompt users to invite team members after they've created shareable content
- Show the value of collaboration: "3 of your experiments have no reviewer — invite a teammate"
- Make adding seats self-serve (no sales call needed)
- Track: seats per account over time, expansion revenue, invite-to-join rate
Key insight: The best expansion revenue is invisible — users add seats because they need collaboration, not because you asked them to upgrade.
