Users click "Upgrade" but don't complete payment

Reduce checkout to one click with saved payment

Every step in your checkout flow loses 10-20% of users. Reduce steps to increase conversion.

When to use

You have users clicking upgrade but not completing payment. Your checkout has 3+ steps.

Hypothesis template

If we reduce checkout from fill in: X steps to fill in: Y steps, payment completion will increase by fill in: target% because friction kills conversion.

Method

The problem: Users click "Upgrade" and then face: select plan → create account → enter card → confirm → wait. Each step loses people.

What Amazon did: One-Click Buy. Saved payment details mean zero friction at the moment of purchase.

The result: Amazon estimated that One-Click Buy generated billions in additional revenue. For SaaS, even removing one checkout step can increase conversion by 10-20%.

How to do it:

  1. Map your current checkout flow: count every page, field, and click
  2. Remove everything that isn't legally required
  3. Pre-select the plan they clicked on (don't make them choose again)
  4. Use Stripe Checkout or similar — they've optimized conversion for years
  5. Offer Google Pay / Apple Pay for mobile
  6. Show a progress indicator if checkout has multiple steps
  7. Track: step-by-step drop-off rates

Key insight: Every form field costs you revenue. Name? Most payment processors don't need it. Address? Only if legally required. Email? They're already logged in.
