Common SaaS pattern

Users pay monthly and churn before you recover acquisition cost

Offer an annual plan with a meaningful discount

Offer 20-30% off for annual billing. You get cash upfront and lock in 12 months of retention.

1-2 days to set up, 1-2 months to measure impact

When to use

You have monthly subscribers. Even a small shift to annual billing dramatically improves unit economics.

Hypothesis template

If we offer annual billing at fill in: discount% off, fill in: target% of users will switch, improving LTV by fill in: target% because annual users have 3-5x lower churn.

Method

The problem: Monthly users churn at 5-10% per month. By month 6, half are gone. Your customer acquisition cost never gets recovered.

What works: Annual plans with a meaningful discount (20-30%). Users who commit annually have dramatically lower churn — not because they're locked in, but because they've made a psychological commitment.

The result: Annual subscribers have 3-5x lower churn than monthly subscribers. The upfront cash also improves your runway.

How to do it:

  1. Set annual pricing at 20% off monthly equivalent (the sweet spot)
  2. Show the monthly equivalent: "€12/month billed annually" not "€144/year"
  3. Default to annual on your pricing page with a toggle to monthly
  4. Offer an annual switch incentive to existing monthly users
  5. Time the offer: show it after users have been on monthly for 2-3 months (they've proven they'll use it)
  6. Track: annual vs monthly churn, LTV difference, and cash flow impact

Key insight: The goal isn't just the discount. Annual commitment changes user psychology — they use the product more because they've invested more.
