What is activation rate?
The percentage of new signups who reach a defined "aha moment" - the point where they experience enough value to become real users. Different for every product: Slack's was 2000 messages, Facebook's was 7 friends.
Formula
Activation Rate = (Users Who Hit Activation Milestone / Total Signups) × 100
Why it matters
Activation is the bridge between acquisition and retention. Users who activate stick around. Users who don't, churn. Fixing activation often has higher ROI than fixing acquisition.
How to improve
Identify your magic number through cohort analysis. Remove friction before the activation point. Make the first-run experience guide users to value. Consider concierge onboarding for complex products.

Find your magic number
There's a specific action that separates users who stick around from users who leave. Find it, then get everyone there faster.
Onboard users personally
Get on a call with every new user. Yes, every one. Seems crazy, but it works better than any automated flow.
Ask what they care about upfront
New users have no history. Ask them what they're into so you can show relevant stuff immediately.
