Add streak tracking to encourage consistent usage

Show users their usage streak and celebrate consistency. Nobody wants to break a 14-day streak.

RetentionBeginner
3-5 days to implement, 2-4 weeks to see streak formation

When to use

Your product benefits from regular usage (daily or weekly). Users currently visit sporadically.

Hypothesis template

If we track and display [usage streaks], daily active usage will increase by [target]% because streak mechanics create loss aversion.

Method

The problem: Users log in when they remember, which is less and less over time. There's no habit loop pulling them back.

What Duolingo perfected: The streak counter. "You're on a 47-day streak!" creates powerful loss aversion. Missing one day feels painful when you've built up a streak.

The result: Streak mechanics increase daily active usage by 20-40%. Users who build a 7+ day streak have dramatically higher long-term retention.

How to do it:

  1. Define what counts as a "streak day" (login, completing an action, checking results)
  2. Show the streak counter prominently in the dashboard
  3. Send a notification if they're about to break their streak: "Don't lose your 12-day streak!"
  4. Celebrate milestones: 7 days, 30 days, 100 days
  5. Consider a "streak freeze" — one free pass per month
  6. Track: streak length distribution, retention by streak length

Key insight: The streak isn't about gamification — it's about habit formation. After 21 days, the behavior becomes automatic. The streak just gets them there.
