Users don't know other customers like them use your product
Show usage stats, active user counts, and peer activity inside the product. Users who feel part of a crowd stay longer.
When to use
You have enough users to show meaningful numbers. Even "100+" works.
Hypothesis template
If we show [social proof] like [user count/activity stats] in-app, engagement will increase by [target]% because users feel validated in their choice.
Method
The problem: Once users are in your product, there's no signal that other people use it too. It feels like they might be the only one.
How to do it:
- Add subtle social proof to the dashboard: "Join 500+ founders running experiments"
- Show aggregate activity: "1,234 experiments run this month"
- Share anonymized benchmarks: "Your activation rate is above average"
- Update numbers automatically from your database
- Keep it subtle — one line or small card, not a banner
Key insight: Social proof works post-signup too, not just on landing pages. Users who see that others use and succeed with your product are less likely to churn.
Success metrics
- •Dashboard engagement
- •Session duration
- •Churn rate change
- •Feature adoption after social proof
Prerequisites
- User count or activity data
- Dashboard space for a subtle social proof element
- A way to update numbers automatically
Common pitfalls
- •Showing fake or inflated numbers
- •Making it too prominent (subtle is better)
- •Not updating the numbers
- •Using this when you have very few users (wait until 100+)
Source: Common SaaS pattern. In-app social proof reduces churn by reassuring users they made the right choice.
