Your product has no network effect — each user is isolated

Add collaborative features that require inviting others

Build features where the experience is better with 2+ people. Shared dashboards, team experiments, collaborative reviews.

ReferralAdvanced
2-4 weeks to build collaborative feature, 2-3 months to measure network effect

When to use

Your product has workflows that would genuinely benefit from collaboration.

Hypothesis template

If we add [collaborative feature] that requires [2+ users], team formation will increase by [target]% because the feature creates organic invite pressure.

Method

The problem: Your product is useful alone but there's no reason to invite others. Each user is a dead end for growth.

What Google Docs did: Documents are useful alone but 10x better when shared for collaboration. Every shared document is an organic invitation to use Google Docs.

How to do it:

  1. Identify one workflow where 2+ people would be better: reviews, approvals, shared dashboards, team goals
  2. Build the collaborative version of that feature
  3. When a user tries to use it, prompt: "Invite a teammate to [collaborate/review/share]"
  4. Make the invited person's experience great — they should see value immediately
  5. Track: collaboration feature usage, invites sent, invite-to-signup rate

Key insight: The best network effects feel like product features, not growth hacks. "Share this experiment with your team for feedback" is a feature. "Invite friends for $5 off" is a hack.
