Your product has no natural viral loop
Make sharing a natural step in using the product, not a separate action. The best viral loops are invisible.
When to use
Your product involves output that naturally gets shared with others (reports, links, content, invites).
Hypothesis template
If we embed sharing into [core workflow] so users naturally [share/collaborate], viral coefficient will increase by [target] because sharing is the product, not a bolt-on.
Method
The problem: You have a "Share" button nobody clicks. Sharing feels like marketing, not product usage.
What Calendly did: Every time you send a Calendly link, the recipient sees "Powered by Calendly" and gets a demo of the product. Sharing IS using the product.
The result: Calendly grew to millions of users primarily through this built-in viral loop. Every meeting scheduled was an organic product demo.
How to do it:
- Identify moments where users naturally need to involve others (sharing results, collaborating, inviting)
- Make sharing the easiest way to complete that task (not an alternative — THE way)
- Ensure the recipient gets genuine value from the shared content
- Subtly brand the shared output: "Created with [your product]" or "Powered by [your product]"
- Make it one click for the recipient to sign up and create their own
- Track: shares per user, recipient-to-signup rate, viral coefficient
Key insight: The best viral loops don't feel like marketing. They feel like using the product. If you have to ask users to share, your loop is wrong.
