What is product-market fit (pmf)?

When your product satisfies a strong market demand. The point where growth becomes easier because the product sells itself. Measured qualitatively through user feedback and quantitatively through retention.

Formula

Sean Ellis test: "How would you feel if you could no longer use [product]?" 40%+ saying "Very disappointed" indicates PMF.

Why it matters

Pre-PMF, focus on learning and iteration. Post-PMF, focus on scaling. Many companies try to scale too early. PMF is the prerequisite for sustainable growth.

How to improve

Talk to users constantly. Find the users who love you and understand why. Double down on what works rather than trying to please everyone. Measure retention and NPS, not just signups.
